University tourism education in Mexico: evolution of academic programs and educational models

Objective: To analyze the evolution, characteristics, and main educational approaches of bachelor’s degree programs in tourism in Mexico in order to identify trends in professional training. Methods: A descriptive qualitative study based on a documentary analysis of 15 bachelor’s degree programs in tourism offered by public and private universities representative of the Mexican educational system. Results: Higher education in tourism in Mexico has undergone a process of expansion and diversification, incorporating different educational models focused on tourism operations, business management, territorial planning, and sustainability. Likewise, there is a heterogeneous incorporation of competencies linked to technological innovation and the digitalization of tourism. Conclusions: University education in tourism in Mexico shows a transition toward more comprehensive and interdisciplinary approaches; however, it faces challenges related to curriculum updates, the integration of digital competencies, and the strengthening of sustainability in educational programs.
